Rangers’ New Approach to Shot Blocking

With the Devils leading the Eastern Conference Finals three games to two, Rangers’ coach John Tortorella has take a new, radical approach to step up his team’s shot blocking for Game 6.

The Rangers' radical new five-man shot-blocking approach

In Friday morning’s practice, the Rangers employed a five-man blocking approach in which all five skaters on the ice piled up behind Henrik Lundqvist in in attempt to keep pucks out of the net.

“We’ve had a great deal of success blocking shots in the slot or at the points, but we’ve also had a few bad bounces. By putting all our guys in the same space, there’s no way shots are getting through. And, of course, in front of them, we’ve got the best goaltender in the game. As we approach our game, I’m very comfortable in where we’re going to go.” – John Tortorella

No word on how – or if – the Rangers will try to generate offense with this strategy, but it’s safe to say that the Devils will have their work cut out for them when it comes to scoring goals as well.
