How the Isles/Ehrhoff Discussions Broke Down
On Tuesday, June 28, the Vancouver Canucks traded negotiating rights to pending-UFA defenseman Christian Ehrhoff to the New York Islanders in exhange for a 4th-round draft pick.
On Wednesday, June 29, the Islanders emailed other teams in the league, stating that talks between them and Ehrhoff had ‘broken down.’

What we can only imagine this discussion went like:
NYI GM Garth Snow: “Christian, we’re very happy to have this chance to speak with you. I know most teams only trade a 7th round pick for negotiating rights, but we like you so much, we think you’re worth a 4th round pick for your rights. Anyway, we have a very exciting young team here on Long Island and we’d like to see if you–”
Christian Ehrhoff: “No.”
NYI GM Garth Snow: “Well, I mean, look, I know we’ve missed the playoffs, but there’s a lot of good –”
Christian Ehrhoff: “No.”
NYI GM Garth Snow: “Look, we gave up a fourth rounder for you, can you at least hear me out?”

Hey, Isles fans, at least you know going into next year’s draft that you’d have wasted that pick away anyhow… right?
Look for Ehrhoff to sign with the Red Wings at 12:01pm on Friday, July 1.
